The Department commissioned this painting from the point of view of the people who run the evening. Up top, a figure in a long black coat raises a glass to the sun, because someone has to. Off to one side, the banquet is laid. In the distance, a city rises exactly as planned.
Everything below is in order. The crowds move in good lines over the hills, past the bridge, past the big blue store, past a statue who approves. Nobody is lost. Everyone has somewhere to be, and a screen to be there with. The host looks out over it all and, quite reasonably, proposes a toast.
We printed it on the back of a white tee, large, with the haze at the edges fading into the fabric so the whole scene seems to rise out of the shirt. Wear it to any gathering. Stand where the light is good. Raise something.
